Lake Apex & Lake Freeman Parkland

Description

Lake Apex is located on what was known as Cleary's Swamp. In 1975 the area was developed by the Gatton Apex Club as a recreational parkland.

Parkland facilities include public BBQs, covered picnic tables, a playground, toilets, skatepark, extensive grassed parkland, dog-friendly walking tracks, a bird hide, permanent exercise equipment and is home to the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre. The Centre which opened in 2009, is home to the Lockyer Valley Visitor Information Centre, Library, Art Gallery, Queensland Transport Museum and onsite cafe and function rooms. The parklands also host a weekly Park Run every Saturday morning, and the Lights on the Hill Trucking Memorial sandstone monument is located at the top of the park off Denis Minson Drive.

If it a nature experience you are looking for then spend some time in the bird hide or take a walk around Lake Apex and you may see some of the 153 species of birds that have been recorded at Lakes Apex and Freeman. Little bush birds, including Golden-headed Cisticola, Red-backed Fairy-wren and Australian Reed-Warbler, fly in and out of the grass and reeds that grow on the edges of the lakes. If you walk quietly, you may see these tiny birds and listen to their songs. 

The park has been established on natural wetlands, which support a wide range of plant and animal life from microscopic algae floating in the water, to majestic birds of prey soaring in the sky above. Cattle Egrets provide a spectacle when they flock to the area for the breeding season between October and March. The islands in Lakes Apex and Freeman and the vegetated margins of both lakes, provide safe nesting places for the many species of birds that visit the parklands. Find out more about our local birdlife: Bird profiles - BirdLife Australia

Help to care for our parkland by parking vehicles in designated areas and avoid driving on grassed areas, this will help prevent erosion. Walk on the pathways, this will help prevent damage to vegetation and limit disturbance of wildlife. Place all rubbish in bins provided. Keep dogs on leads and clean up after your dog. Report any vandalism.
