Nature journalling is the practice of drawing and/or writing in response to observations of nature. It’s about recording your observations and any thoughts, questions, discoveries and feelings that arise, in a notebook. Engaging in nature journalling has many benefits. It enhances one’s observation skills and appreciation of nature, it increases attention to detail and makes outdoor experiences more meaningful. Nature journalling also helps you to slow down, it clears the mind and reduces anxiety.
Join Hanneke Nooren, a visual art educator with a professional background in nature conservation, for a two-hour outdoor workshop that covers the key aspects of nature journalling.
The workshop includes exercises to practice observation and drawing skills and an opportunity to do some nature journalling for yourself.
All materials will be provided for use during the workshop, and you will be able to take your sketchbook home at the end of the session.
If you would prefer to bring your own supplies, please bring:
- Lined notebook to make notes
- Blank unlined sketchbook (minimum 125gsm)
- grey lead pencil (preferably 2B)
- Ink pen with waterproof ink
- Optional: colour materials (coloured pencils or watercolours).
As we will be sketching outdoors and moving between different locations, plastic chairs will be provided. However, if you would be more comfortable, you are welcome to bring a mat or camp chair.
Meeting Point
Please meet at the library at the start of the workshop. We will then walk to the lake and other nearby sketching locations. We recommend bringing:
- Hat
- Water bottle
- Sunscreen.
Bookings required, $10 per person. Light refreshments provided.
